A Deep Divide Separated by Plenty of Common Ground

Read the whole piece and you realize just how centrist Obama's proposals are and just how insane the current GOP leadership is:

Obama: Tougher On Al Qaeda Than Bush

"In a matter of months, both leaders of the Qaeda-allied Taliban in Pakistan have been targeted and killed by US drone attacks. The latest was in retaliation for the murder of CIA officials in a suicide attack by a double agent who turned on the US. If you add this record - and there are many examples of similar surgical strikes decapitating Qaeda figures in the last year - to the ramp-up of forces in Afghanistan and overhaul of strategy there, I think you can make a very solid case that in the war on Jihadist terrorism, Obama is proving far more effective - in both soft and hard power - than the Bush administration ever was.

The Republicans will not concede this, because their war is not really at this point on al Qaeda. It's on Obama."

2 Face Politics (Twitter Style)

Here's a twitter quote from North Carolina Republican Congresswoman Virginia Foxx. Amazing. They demonize him to their constituents and then shake hands and ask for autographs. Wow.

"Pres gave us another lecture. Our guys asked great questions. Need independent fact checker for his comments. Got autograph" -Cong. Virginia Foxx on Twitter

Republican Party of No

"On every single major issue of the day, they are incoherent. They have no workable plans to insure the uninsured and no practical way to contain healthcare costs; most deny climate change even exists; most seek to prolong wars because ... er, we have to be tough; their response to the massive debt is to defend Medicare and call for tax cuts; their position on civil rights is that gay people need to go to Jesus; their position on terror suspects is to detain them and torture them, violating domestic and international law; their position on immigration is to round up millions and force them to go home.

My worry, however, is that there are enough Americans perfectly happy to live with this nihilism indefinitely, and to perpetuate the policies of spend-and-borrow and invade-and-occupy that any serious attempt to address our problems is impossible. And their response to that will be to blame all those problems on a Democratic president, if there is one; and if there's a Republican president, to simply deny that any of the problems exist at all."

World’s First Feminist Work?

Pascal-Emmanuel Gobry explores the New Testament:

The Gospels often show how, in the context of a patriarchal society, women played a very important role in the early Church. It is Mary who initiates Jesus’ miracle, and when she brings it up he dismisses her, calling her “woman”. Throughout the Gospels, whenever the men dismiss the women, it is later found out that the women were, in fact, right. After Jesus is resurrected, it is women who first find the empty tomb and, when they report this to the Apostles, they are first dismissed. In a matter of days, the Apostles, the leaders of the Church, have forgotten Jesus’ words about rebuilding the Temple, but the women remember, and accept the revelation. And it is the women, of course, who are right.

Jesus’ public life thus begins and ends with women who, better than the men, understand His Revelation. Furthermore, at Cana, Mary does more than just suggest and initiate: she takes charge, asking for the servants to bring him the jars of water. In the Church, women are not bystanders, they are very much leaders

Death of a Nation (Russia)

Amazing stuff here. Must see for all you teachers. . .

Obama says F*ck It!

Sometimes you need humor to get the point across. Pass it around.

Jackson 5 - Can You Feel It (Live 2001)

This video hits me hard. This is their last show together. And it's easy for us to get caught up in the "weirdness" of Michael and some of his brothers. But at the 1:49 - 1:51 mark there is a man, a black man, who is feeling it! And I just can't help but to relate to those emotions. I feel excited for that guy. But I also feel sad. Michael meant the world to people. And to discard that would be a shame. . .

A Question Of Nerve

FROM ANDREW SULLIVAN:

"The one thing the Cheneyites and Rovians have is nerve. They assert everything with utter certainty and confidence even though their record is appalling. Conservatives and liberals of doubt don't think or act that way. We are aware that we can be wrong; we try and analyze our own mistakes; we try to give a fair hearing to the other side.

This can lead to an assumption that we are wusses. Or weak. But of course the opposite is true. It is the strong who can entertain doubt and the weak who cannot. Cheney is not a strong man; he is a bully hiding his own rank moral and political and national security failure.

The whole point of the Obama candidacy - why he matters - is that he is a liberal of doubt. But he also showed in the campaign that this was a strength. And when he needed to, he revealed a ruthlessness and radicalism and won.

And that is why this moment is so vital.

He must not just rally the House Dems, he must rally the country. He must bring us back in. And we must back him up. This is not just about a centrist comprehensive health reform bill. It is about defeating an entire brand of cowardly, cynical, spin cycle bullshit that has brought this country down and promoting an adult and reasonable discourse that grapples with our problems."
